Roles of members and how group carried out task

For this project, our group brainstormed together and decided what we would choose as the basic storyline for our project. Taking ideas from each of our four members we looked into various possibilities surrounding the format of the project we could choose. After deciding together we chose a short story. We also wanted to make our story as original as possible. Our final decision would be to use an old fairytale and bring it forward into modern times. After writing the script and deciding who would take each role we recorded our voices together, each person had a separate role to play, hence all of our voices can be heard in the project. We then recorded background noise from Nubar, on campus, to put behind the voices. During the editing process we used the package Audacity which was available for us to use on campus and in our own homes. We then edited the audio project together each putting our own individual input into it. Finalising it we reviewed it numerous times together to ensure we had created our project under the correct guidelines given to us.

Narrative and Style

As the topic for this project is “The story of…” we decided rather than create a new story, we would take an old fairytale and bring it forward into modern times. So we chose the fairytale of ‘Beauty and the Beast’. We decided to bring it forward to modern times, creating a narrative similar to a conversation between young people of today. We have also taken a comical approach to the story reflecting the vast contrast between old and modern day love.

Our story follows a conversation between Belle (the princess*) and Lu (Lumiere*). Belle describes to Lu her ‘love life’ on Tinder. Gaston (who wanted to marry Belle*) turns out to be a womaniser so she is not attracted to him, which reflects the original story. Then we continue on to discover how Belle is then ‘catfished’ - deceived into believing Eric is a handsome man and to her horror discovers he is ugly and unlike his online photographs. This reflects the original story when Belle discovers The Beast is not a man but rather an animal.

Media Techniques

For this project we used our own mobile phones to record the audio and then uploaded this content onto the computer to edit it on Audacity.
We used both our own recorded content and a very small amount of online content. However, we wanted to record our own content as much as possible to make it original.
We also sped up the audio which warped our voices also creating a comical or pantomime approach.

Meaning and Representation Within The Story

Our story follows the old tale of Beauty and The Beast. However, we decided to bring it forward to modern times in order to show the vast comparison between the idea of finding love in the 1740’s and 2016.
We wanted to represent Belle as a modern day girl looking for love. This raises many questions revolving around the idea of online love. The idea of meeting your partner online during the 1740’s did not exist. It is only in the past year or two that online dating has exploded across the world, but has it become the ‘norm’?
We wanted our project to reflect this idea and almost show the bizarreness of the world of online dating. We have taken a comical approach of addressing this subject.

How The Medium Interferes In The Way The Story Is Told

The use of an audio project means we can only hear voices and description rather than view the story on a screen. As a result each character must be distinguished between so the story can be understood properly.
This medium (ie. audio) is often left to the imagination of the listener, which can interfere with how the producer wants the character to be viewed.
We wanted our story to be simple and the accents we put on distinguish between the characters. The image of the characters themselves can be left to the imagination of the listener. However, due to the fact the story reflects the original fairytale, listeners will have an image already in their minds.
